Hours spent looking at computers, phones, and tablets can leave your eyes feeling sore, tired, or difficult to focus. While digital eye strain is common, persistent discomfort may sometimes point to an underlying problem with how your eyes work together. At Eyes on the Bloc Optometry, we evaluate visual function to determine whether symptoms may be related to binocular vision dysfunction, focusing problems, dry eye, or another concern.
Screen use places prolonged demands on your near vision. Your focusing system must maintain a clear image while both eyes continuously coordinate on the same target. You may also blink less frequently while concentrating on a screen, which can contribute to dryness and irritation.
For many people, taking breaks and adjusting their workspace helps. However, recurring headaches, eye pain, or difficulty focusing may indicate that more than ordinary screen fatigue is involved.
Binocular vision allows your two eyes to work together and create a single, comfortable image. Binocular vision dysfunction, or BVD, can occur when the eyes have difficulty coordinating efficiently.
Extended computer work does not necessarily cause BVD, but demanding near tasks can make an existing coordination problem more noticeable. Someone may see clearly on a standard vision chart yet still struggle to keep their eyes comfortably aligned during prolonged reading or computer use.
Symptoms that may warrant a closer evaluation include:
• Headaches after reading or computer work
• Aching, tired, or strained eyes
• Blurred or double vision
• Difficulty maintaining focus on a screen
• Words appearing to move or become difficult to track
• Dizziness or discomfort during visually demanding tasks
• Needing frequent breaks from reading or close work
If your eyes consistently hurt after screen use, simply checking whether you need a stronger glasses prescription may not tell the whole story. A comprehensive eye exam can evaluate visual clarity, eye health, focusing ability, depth perception, and how effectively your eyes coordinate.
When symptoms suggest a binocular vision issue, we may recommend a more detailed binocular vision evaluation. This allows us to identify problems such as convergence insufficiency, focusing disorders, or other difficulties affecting comfortable near vision.
When binocular vision dysfunction is contributing to eye strain, vision therapy may be an appropriate treatment option. Vision therapy uses personalized activities and techniques designed to improve skills such as eye teaming, focusing, tracking, and visual coordination.
Treatment is based on the specific findings from your evaluation rather than your symptoms alone. Depending on your visual needs, we may also discuss appropriate prescription lenses, computer eyewear, workspace adjustments, or strategies for reducing unnecessary visual stress.
If screen time is leaving your eyes sore, strained, or difficult to focus, schedule a binocular vision evaluation with Eyes on the Bloc Optometry to find out what may be contributing to your discomfort and explore personalized solutions.
